Key Considerations When Picking A Budget Bench

The last thing we want to do is grab a bench that breaks. So while we are aiming for budget, we still want to take safety and stability into consideration. Investing in a solid bench prevents replacement costs and safety risks. Think about your lifting routine and how often you are going to use your bench. We often use ours for benching, for a seat for cable work, use with dumbbells, curls, and much more. Our bench gets used in nearly every workout in some fashion.
We owned a cheap, poorly made bench, for a very short period of time. You can see how that went right here.
So we want to focus on stability and safety, looking at the weight capacity for insights. Keep in mind that the weight capacity on benches often includes you as the lifter and the weight you are lifting. So a bench with a 250lb weight capacity can support a 200lb person, and 50lbs of additional weight (so 2 x 25lb dumbbells as an example). If you weigh less, you have more head room here.
Should You Buy Used?

I loved the used market when I first build my gym. And it is still a viable option for some people. The difficult part is knowing what you are looking at. Cheap benches litter Facebook Marketplace for budget prices, but they are GARBAGE. So don’t run out and grab the first one you see.
Additional Considerations
At this point in my home gym journey, I recommend most people grab an adjustable bench. Unless if you are chasing down large flat bench press numbers, adjustable benches offer more to the average home gym owner, with very few compromises.
The Best Budget-friendly Benches For A Home Gym
Fitness Reality 1000 Super Max Adjustable Bench
This bench gets high remarks across r/HomeGym from budget savvy home gym owners, and for good reason. It has a high weight capacity, is stable, and comes in at a killer price. It checks every box we want for a true budget friendly adjustment bench for a home gym. And you can get it on Amazon!
Flybird Adjustable Bench
We owned a very similar bench to this for awhile and did a full review on it. It is a bench with a lot of compromises, but at a very low price. This is the absolute lowest quality, lowest budget, lowest tier bench I would recommend. It folds up, stores away easily, can be moved around without any concern for all athletes. But do not expect to take it for a ride as a heavier individual or stronger lifter.
REP AB-3100
This is going to be almost outside of the budget realm. But this blends a few options for us. We sneak into buying from REP, who is the king of benches. We snag a bench that won’t ever need to be upgraded, even for larger lifters. And we still come in shy of what the more premium offerings are asking for. If you want to buy once, cry once, but on a budget, this might be your best approach.
What Bench Would I Buy?
My home gym is anything but budget at this point. And we actually tested half a dozen benches at the same time, and have continued to update our favorite bench listings right here. So if you want to dig into the premium life, either because you are a bigger lifter, or you just like nice things, that article will take care of you.
If I’m buying a budget-friendly bench for a home gym, say for a friend, I’m taking the Fitness Reality option. I think it checks the right boxes.
